Korea Randonneurs offers an exciting 2013 Brevet season. We will run a full series out of Cheonan and Gwangju and, for the first time, Brevets will start in Seoul and Busan. A complete new 1200K will be run in Jeolla-do and the annual SBS will start both in Busan and Seoul.

한국 란도너스에서 2013년 브레베 시즌을 소개드립니다. 천안과 광주에서 시리즈 전체를 열게 되며, 처음으로 서울과 부산에서 출발하는 브레베도 생깁니다. 완전히 새로운 코스의 1200K가 전라도에서 진행될 예정이고 연례 대회인 SBS를 부산과 서울 양쪽에서 출발하게 됩니다.

역시 SBS는 그 어느 대회보다 스펙터클 하고 거친 1000K 브레베였습니다. 참가자 중 62%만이 제한 시간 75시간 안에 서울로 돌아오는 데 성공했습니다. 이번이 두 번째인 SBS(서울-부산-서울)는 멋진 가을 하늘 아래 진행되었으며 결연한 의지의 10명이 한국 란도너스를 대표하는 이 대회를 완주했습니다. 18명의 참가자들은 (16명은 10월 5일 저녁에, 두 명은 사전답사 라이딩 때) 서울을 떠나 장엄하게 흐르는 한강을 따라오르며 남서쪽으로 향했습니다. 참가자들은 이어지는 3일간 한국의 아름다운 풍경과 산세를 경험할 수 있었습니다. 란도너들은 한국의 초록빛 심장부라 할 평탄한 농촌 지역을 통과하고, 우뚝 솟은 산들을 몇 번이나 올라야 했으며, 시끌벅적한 도시들도 지났습니다. 그야말로 한국의 전통과 미래를 함께 볼 수 있었습니다. 특히 만만치 않았던 구간으로는 가지산의 3연속 고개와 괴산-예천 사이의 분수령이 있었습니다. 낮에는 딱 좋게 따뜻한 날씨였지만 밤 시간에 참가자들은 산간 지대의 차가운 기온을 경험해야 했습니다. (사전답사 라이딩 때 제이슨 햄과 로타 헤닉하우즌은 예상치 못한 혹한의 밤을 견디려고 길가의 커피 자판기마다 들러서 몸을 데웠습니다.)
주목할 만한 일이 또 있었는데, (RAAM 완주자이기도 한) 김기중님의 뒷드레일러가 부산으로 가는 도중 고장났습니다. 김기중님은 "자가제작 싱글 바이크"로 문제를 해결하고 부산까지 달렸습니다. 그리고는 한밤 중에 자전거를 고쳐줄 샵을 겨우겨우 찾아내서 토요일 아침에야 다시 길 위를 달릴 수 있었습니다. 완주하신 분들 모두 축하드립니다. 완주자 명단: 최병희, 후쿠시마 타이키, 햄 제이슨, 헤닉하우즌 로타, 정영화, 김기중, 김민수, 김성학, 김영삼, 이규원.

SBS는 한국 란도너스의 2012년 마지막 대회였습니다. 2013년 시즌에는 부산과 천안, 광주에서 또 다른 라이딩이 있을 예정이고 전라도와 근처 시도를 달리는 1200K도 있습니다. 기대하세요!

SBS has again proven itself again as one of the most spectacular and toughest 1000K Brevets as only 62% of the riders made it back to Seoul within the 75 hour time limit. The 2^nd edition of the SBS (서울-부산-서울) was blessed with wonderful fall weather and 10 determined riders finished this signature event of Korea Randonneurs. 18 riders departed Seoul (16 in the evening of October 5, two on the check out ride) and headed southwest along the majestic Han River. Over the next three days riders experienced the beauty and topography of Korea. Randonneurs cycled through the flat rural green heart of Korea to the towering mountain ranges that had to be scaled several times and the bustling cities, all epitomes of the ancient and future-driven Korea. Of particular challenge were three passes in the Gaji-san and the peninsular divide between Geosan and Yecheon. While the days were pleasantly warm, riders experienced cold nighttime temperatures in the mountains (during their check-out ride Jason Ham and Lothar Hennighausen suffered through unexpectedly frigid nights, using every

Noteworthy, Kim Ki-joong's (RAAM finisher) rear shifter broke on the way to Busan. He bypassed the problem, and rode with the "self made Single Speed" to Busan, where he arrived Saturday before midnight. He managed to find a bike shop that was willing to fix his bike in the night and he was back on the road on Sunday morning. Congratulations to all finishers: Choi Byung-hee, Fukushima Taiki, Ham Jason, Hennighausen Lothar, Jeong Young-hwa, Kim Ki-joong, Kim Min-soo, Kim Sung-hak, Kim Young-sam, Lee Kyu-won.

SBS was the last 2012 event of Korea Randonneurs. The 2013 season will bring exciting new rides out of Busan, Cheonan and Gwangju, including a 1200K in Jeolla and neighboring provinces - stay tuned!

One week after the Typhoon Sanba wrecked havoc a new edition of BGB and GBG was held. On September 22 seven riders mounted their bikes at Han's bike shop at 06:00 and headed east to the port city of Busan. At exactly the same time three riders took off from Busan and headed west to Gwangju. This time the weather cooperated and Randonneurs enjoyed cycling through Jeolla. Also rain showers had been forecasted for Sunday, the day turned out to be sunny with perfect riding temperature. The aftermath of Typhoon Sanba caused some challenges as the Nakdong River had carried high water and some roads and most of the bike trails along the river, had been flooded and thus leaving plenty of mud behind. A section of the trail along the Nakdong river was closed and this caused twice a detour of 7 km. Making things worse, the detour was leading over a mountain and this resulted in two times 250 m extra climbing meters. Nevertheless, everybody made it within the 40-hours limit, except one rider who had to stop after 235 km due to physical problems.

Despite a fast approaching Typhoon, a few hardy Korea Randonneurs decided to defy mother nature and ride the 600K Brevets (GBG and BGB) on September 15. Six riders started from Gwangju and three from Busan. At the start riders in Busan faced heavy rain but as the day progressed the skies cleared. As night approached the flood gates opened and heavy downpour challenged Randonneurs. Goon Koch (R in the picture with our very own Russell Morris), an American visiting Korea, who had started in Gwangju, was the first to arrive at the half way point in Busan. After another night of pouring rain and several crashes 5 riders finished this epic 600K Brevet within the 40 hour time limit. Four of the riders were our friends from TEAM BOODOO.

600K Busan-Gwangju-Busan (and Gwangju-Busan-Gwangju)

NEW DATE: On September 22, 2012 Korea Randonneurs will host two 600K Brevets. The time limit is 40 hours and riders need to be prepared for night riding (night riding rules). With the heat of the summer fading we move into a cool and cycling friendly fall. These 600K Brevets are the perfect opportunity to continue the quest of Korea Randonneurs to add more distance to your accomplishments. The rides are easy (compared to the Cheonan 600K) and should appeal to many riders, including those who have “taken the summer off”. It is also the last opportunity to qualify for the 1000K SBS held on October 5. 

2012년 09월 22일 한국 란도너스는 600K 브레베 둘을 개최합니다. 제한 시간은 40시간이며 참가자들은 야간 라이딩에 대비해야 합니다 (야간 라이딩 규칙). 여름의 열기가 물러나면서 이제 자전거 타기에 좋은 시원한 가을로 접어들고 있습니다. 이번 600K 브레베는 한국 란도너스의 여정을 계속 함께하며 새로운 길을 달려볼 수 있는 좋은 기회입니다. (천안 600K에 비하면) 쉬운 코스니까 여름 동안 "시즌오프" 했던 분들을 포함해 여러 분들의 마음에 들 겁니다. 10월 5일 열리는 1000K SBS 참가 자격을 위한 마지막 기회이기도 합니다.

란도너들은 이번에 처음으로 부산에서 출발하게 됩니다. 부산은 올해 많은 대회들을 꾸려온 운영총괄이사 얀 본스트라 할아버지가 사는 곳이기도 합니다. 참가자들은 일출과 함께 출발해서 처음 11 km는 시청에서 사상구 낙동강까 지 부산 시내를 달리게 됩니다. 하늘이 밝아오는 동안 참가자들은 우리나라 최대의 강인 낙동강을 따라 새로 난 자전거 전용 도로를 즐기게 됩니다. 잔잔한 강물을 따라가노라면 높은 산들이 옆으로 지나가고 새들의 노래소리 사이로 간간이 기차 소리가 들려옵니다. 삼랑진을 지난 다음에는 자전거 도로에서 빠져나와 낙동강을 따라 60km를 더 달려갑니다. 그리고서 큰 고개 하나만 넘으면 합천의 두 번째 기준점에 도착하게 됩니다. 그 다음 란도너들은 아름다운 합천호를 따라 달리게 됩니다. 저 멀리 지리산의 여러 봉우리들이 눈에 들어오는데, 올해 코스에서는 그리로 가지 않으니 안심해도 됩니다. 우리가 달릴 길은 지리산 북쪽을 따라가는데 가파르거나 힘든 산악 코스는 없습니다. 광주로 가는 길은 24번 국도를 주로 따라가며 유서 깊은 도시 남원, 순창과 담양으로 이어집니다. 그리고 나면 반환점인 광 주까지는 금방입니다. 참가자들은 자정 무렵에 한순권님 자전거 가게에 도착하게 됩니다. 거기서 채울 것 채우고 쉴 만큼 쉬었으면 이제 부산까지 복귀 라이딩입니다. 도착하면 완주 지점에서 얀 할아버지가 반겨줄 겁니다.

For the first time Randonneurs will start a Brevet in Busan, the hometown of Jan Boonstra, our General Manager who has managed this year’s Brevets. Riders will start at sun rise and the first 11 km will lead them from the City Hall through Busan city to the Nakdong River at Sasang-dong. While the morning takes shape, riders will enjoy the brand new exclusive bike trail along Korea’s largest river, the Nakdong. Randonneurs will ride through the serene valley flanked by high mountains and accompanied by the song of birds and occasionally a passing train. After Samnangjin we will leave the bike trail and continue to follow the Nakdong River for another 60 km. After only one major climb Randonneurs will reach the second control at Hapcheon. From there we will follow the beautiful Hapcheon Lake. The high mountains of Jiri-san tower at the horizon, but be assured those mountains are not on this year’s program. Our route stays north of Jiri-san and there are no steep or difficult mountain passes. The route continues to Gwangju mainly following route 24 along the historic city of Namwon and the pleasant cities of Sunchang and Damyang. From there it is only a short ride to Gwangju, the turnaround of the Brevet. Riders will arrive at Han’s Bike Shop control around midnight. Here they can fuel up, rest and get ready for the return ride to Busan where they will be greeted by Jan Boonstra at the finish.

Super Randonneur and Korea 5000 medal

To earn ACP Super Randonneur status riders need to complete and entire Brevet series (200K, 300K, 400K, 600K) i one calendar year.

To earn the new KR5000 award, riders need to complete an entire Brevet series, a Fleche, a 1000K, the Korea 1200K Grand Randonnee and an additional 1000km in Brevets.  This has to be accomplished in 2 successive calendar years. We anticipate to crown the first KR5000 winners later this year. Sign up for the 1200K and the 1000K SBS!

On May 26 twenty-three riders mounted their bikes to answer the call of Korea's first 1200K 'Grand Randonnee'.  After 90 hours of cycling along the ocean and through the mountains, accompanied by scorching heat and hail showers, twenty-one riders are now KR1200 finishers.

Cheonan (천안) 600K - ride report

한국 란도너스는 천안 600K에 도전하였고 모두 28명이 40시간의 제한시간 이내에 완주하였습니다. 라이더는 동이 트기 전에 시작했고 천안을 빠져 나와 충주로 향했습니다. 그곳에서 그들은 남쪽으로 향했고 대륙을 건너 풍요로운 한국의 농경지로 진입했습니다. 논과 작은 마을, 텅 빈 도로가 그들과 봉양까지 동행하였습니다. 라이더는 해질녘 봉양을 지났고 영동과 동상을 향해 서쪽 산등성이를 지났습니다. 그곳에서 라이더는 부여와 청양을 향해 남쪽으로 돌았습니다. 그리고 집으로 돌아오는 친숙한 길을 지나 해가 떨어진 후 천안에 도착했습니다.

600K – Green Heart of Korea

Korea Randonneurs accepted the challenge of the Cheonan 600K and a total of 28 riders finished this challenging course within the 40-hour time limit. Rides started before dawn and exited Cheonan to Chungju. From there they headed south, crossed the continental divide and entered the rich farmland of Korea. Rice fields, small villages and largely empty roads accompanied them to Bongyang. Riders left Bongyang by nightfall and turned west crossing mountain ridges to Yeongdong and Dongsang.  From there riders turned north to Buyeo and Cheongyang before heading home on familiar roads and arriving Cheonan after the sun had set.

Lee Soon Jin (이순진), the first female Randonneur (Randonneuse) to finish a 600k, also achieved Super Randonneur (SR) status.  By finishing this 600K a total of 19 riders are now Korea Super Randonneurs (KSR): Choi Jae Hyung, Gwak Dong Won, Ham Jason, Hennighausen Lothar, Hong Kee Pyo, Jeong Jun Seung, Kim Man Geun, Kim Sung Hak, Kim Young Han, Kim Young Min, Kim Young Sam, Ko Seong Ik, Lee Sang Ok, Lee Soon Jin, Oh Hyun Taek, Park Kyoung Hwan, Seo Jae Ho, Seong Gi Heon, Yoon Byoung Hoon, .

Cheonan (천안) 600K Brevet (April 14)

Start: Cheonan-Asan KTX station (map).  Riders will be released at 06:00, 06:30 and 07:00.  Check-in starts at 05:30.  Finish: Cheonan GS25 (map).  출발지점: KTX 천안아산역 (지도). 06:00, 06:30, 07:00에 출발합니다. 체크인은 05:30에 시작합니다. 완주지점: 천안 GS25 (지도).

600K 한국의 대단한 심장 (4월 14일)  이 도전적인 라이드는 천안 봄 시즌 중 “한국의 푸른 심장”으로서의 하이라이트입니다. 라이더는 동이 트기 전에 출발하고 산으로 향하기 전에 천안을 동쪽으로 빠져나가게 됩니다. 라이더는 한국의 비옥한 농경지로 들어갈 것이기 때문에 충주의 컨트롤에서 충전해야 합니다. 논, 작은 마을과 드넓은 빈 도로는 봉양까지 우리와 함께합니다. SBS를 완주한 사람들은 청주와 봉양 사이의 길을 기억하게 될것입니다. 봉양에서 라이더는 서쪽으로 돌아 영동으로 향하고 동상으로 향합니다. 라이더는 야간의 낮은 온도에서 100km 이상 넓은 산악도로와 씨름할 것입니다. 동상에서 푸짐한 아침식사 뒤에 라이더는 계속해서 남쪽으로 부여와 청양으로 향합니다. 그리고 한반도에 해가 지기 전에 천안에 도착하게 됩니다.  거리: 603km; 시간제한: 40시간; 출발: 오전 6시. 큐 시트 – 지도 – 구글 지도 (km 0 to km 503)  -  구글 지도 (km 503 to km 604)  –  GPS트랙.  문의사항이 있으면 연락주세요: 영어 - 로타 헤닉하우젠 (Hennighausen Lothar). 한국어- (Allison Rhee).  

600K – Green Heart of Korea (April 7 and 14)  This challenging ride is the highlight of our Cheonan spring season as it features the “green heart of Korea”. Riders will start before dawn and exit Cheonan to the east before heading into the mountains. At the control in Chungju riders should fuel up as they soon will cross the continental divide to enter the rich farmland of Korea. Rice fields, small villages and largely empty roads will accompany us to Bongyang.  Those who rode SBS will remember the route between Chungju and Bongyang.  In Bongyang riders will turn west to Yeongdong and then to Dongsang.  Riders will tackle this mountainous stretch of more than 100km during the night and low temperatures might be expected. After a hearty breakfast in Dongsang riders will continue north to Buyeo and Cheongyang before arriving in Cheonan long after the sun has set on the peninsula.  Distance: 604km; time limit: 40 hours; start: 06:00.  CUE SHEETS  –  MAPS  –  GOOGLE MAP (km 0 to km 503)  -  GOOGLE MAP (km 503 - km 604)  –  GPS TRACKS.  For additional information contact: English - 로타 헤닉하우젠 (Hennighausen Lothar). 다섯 팀, 다섯 국가, 광주로 내려가다 
한국에서의 첫 번째 플레쉬는 주말인 3월 31일에 치러졌습니다. 다섯 팀은 토요일에 천안, 대구, 광주, 인천 마지막으로 서울에서 출발하였고 24시간 360km를 달려 광주의 한의 자전거 샵에서 만났습니다. 점심 만찬을 마치고(맥주, 막걸리와 소주를 제공해주신 코리아 란도너스에게 감사를 전합니다.) 라이더는 집으로 돌아가는 버스와 KTX에 올라탔습니다. 그리고 4월 7일, 14일에 시작될 천안 600K를 준비하기 시작했습니다. 
날씨의 신은 라이더에게 여러 가지 메시지를 전달합니다. 3월 브레벳에서 우리는 비와 혹한의 밤을 겪었지만 서쪽과 북서쪽에서 불어오는 50km/h의 바람은 몇몇 팀에게 심각한 도전이었습니다. 몇몇 통계: 인천 팀을 제외하고 모든 팀은 김씨 성을 가진 라이더가 있었습니다; 대구 팀은 그들이 한국의 산맥을 넘는 것처럼 오르막을 올랐습니다; 천안 팀은 처음 5시간 동안 역풍과 마주하여 달렸습니다; 세 팀에는 PBP 완주자가 있었습니다; Marlene Afzal 은 한국 플레쉬를 완주한 첫 번째 여성이 되었습니다.  

Five Teams, five nations descend onto Gwangju

The first Fleche Korea was held on the weekend of March 31.  Five teams started on Saturday from Cheonan, Daegu, Gwangju, Incheon and Seoul and met 360km and 24 hours later at Han’s bike shop in Gwangju. After a festive full menu Korean lunch (thanks Korea Randonneurs for providing beer, Magoli and Soju) rider boarded buses and the KTX to return home and getting ready for the Cheonan 600Ks on April 7 and 14. 

            The weather gods send mixed messages to riders. We were spared the rain and freezing night temperatures experienced on the March Brevets but the 50km/h wind coming from the west and northwest was a serious challenge to some teams.  Some statistics: with the exception of team Incheon, every team had a rider named “Kim”; team Daegu had the most climbing as they crossed the Korean mountain range; team Cheonan rode for the first 5 hours straight into headwind; three teams had PBP finishers; Marlene Afzal became the first woman to ride the Fleche Korea;

천 안 400k 브레벳은 45명의 라이더에게 대부분의 코스에서 강한 역풍과 옆바람, 야간에 매우 추운 온도와 라이드의 끝에 심각한 오르막길로 45명의 라이더에게 도전했습니다. 36명의 코리아 란도너스는 27시간 제한 시간 이내에 끝냈고 6명의 라이더가 제한 시간을 지나고서야 완주했습니다. 라이더는 천안아산 KTX역에서부터 서쪽으로 출발하였고 한 시간 이내에 산을 올라 첫 번째 컨트롤, 오래 전에 없어진 왕국의 중심인 백제에 도달했습니다. 그곳으로부터 란도너스는 남서쪽으로 향했고 금강을 따라 항구도시 군산에 이르렀습니다. 서쪽으로부터 불어온 40km/h을 넘는 바람은 비참했습니다. 새만금 방파제에서의 32km 라이드 구간은 하루 중 하이라이트였습니다. 그리고 방파제로부터 불어오는 강한 순풍은 라이더를 빠르게 밀어주었습니다. 코스의 가장 서쪽 지점인 곰소항에서, 라이더는 영하의 밤을 보낼 준비를 했습니다(팀 blasting headwind의 사진). 천안으로 가는 긴 도로는 하늘에 밝은 별이 있고 북쪽으로부터 끊임없이 바람이 불어오는 황량한 시골 도로를 통해 라이더를 북동쪽으로 이끌었습니다. 

이순진 (Lee Soonjin) 은 400k 브레벳을 완주한 한국 최초의 여성이 되었습니다. 한국 란도너스는 그녀를 축하하며 600K와 1200K에서 그녀를 다시 보기를 기대하고 있습니다.

The Cheonan 400K Brevet challenged 45 riders with strong headwinds and crosswinds for most of the ride, freezing temperatures during the night and serious climbs at the end of the ride GOOGLE MAP.  Thirty-six Korea Randonneurs finished within the 27-hour time limit and six more riders finished outside the lime limit.  Riders used the southern escape from the CheonanAsan KTX and within one hour had to climb mountain passes to reach the first control in Baekje land, the center of a long gone kingdom.   From there Randonneurs headed southwest and followed the Geum River (Geumgang) to reach the port city of Gunsan.  40+ km/h winds from the west made life miserable.  The 32 km ride on the Saemangeum seawall was the highlight of the day and strong tailwinds on part of the seawall propelled riders to high speed.  In Gomso Harbor, the most southern point of the ride) riders got ready for sub zero night (see picture of Team “blasting Headwind).  The long road home to Cheonan led riders to the northeast over deserted country roads with bright stars in the sky and a constantly nagging wind blowing from the north.

LEE Soon Jin (이순진) became the first Korean woman to finish a 400K Brevet – Korea Randonneurs congratulates her and is looking forward to see her again on the 600K and 1200K.  Way to go Lee Soon Jin!

천안 브레벳 모두에서 대회는 KTX 천안아산역에서 시작하게 됩니다  ---  The ride start for the 200k, 300k and 400k Cheonan Brevets will be at the Cheonan-Asan KTX station.  

야간주행이 포함된 모든 Brevets에 참가하는 라이더들은 야간주행 정보 및 규칙 을 반드시 지켜야합니다  ---  All Brevets will include some night riding and riders have to follow the night riding rules

Cheonan Brevets - 천안 브레벳 

Cheonan 300K Brevet: updated maps, cue sheets and gps files have been posted. Riders need to print their own maps and cue sheets.  A limited supply of maps will be for sale at the start"  ---  천안 300K Brevet: 지도, 큐시트, 그리고 GPS파일들이 업데이트되어 포스팅했습니다.  라이더들은 본인의 각자의 지도와 큐시트를 프린트해 오셔야합니다. 출발점에서는 소량의 지도만 판매될 예정입니다.

입금 후, Brevet에 참가를 하지 않기로 결정하셨더라도 환불은 불가능합니다. 죄송합니다!                                                                                                                                                                       

Fleche 2012 - 플레쉬 2012 3월 31일에서 4월 1일에 걸쳐 24시간짜리 "플레쉬" 팀 대회가 열릴 예정입니다 (상 세정보). 네 팀이 경로를 제출했으며 모든 팀은 광주로 향하게 됩니다. 천안에서 출발하는 낙지팀 (경 로), 부산팀 (경 로), 대구팀(경로), 광주팀이 있습니다. 부산팀에 참여하고 싶으신 분은 얀 분스트라 (Jan Boonstra) 님에게, 천안팀은 로타 헤닉하우즌 (Lothar Hennighausen) 님에게, 대구팀은 러셀 모리스 (Russell Morris) 님에게, 광주팀은 서상원님에게 연락을 주시면 됩니다.   ---   The 24 hour "Fleche" team event will be held on March 31 and April 1 (details).  Five teams have submitted routes and they will converge on Gwangju.  Team Nakji will start from Cheonan (map), team Busan (map), team Daegu (map), team Gwangju (map) and team Seoul (map).  Riders interested in joining the Busan team should contact Jan Boonstra, for the Cheonan team Lothar Hennighausen, for the Daegu team Russell Morris, for the Seoul team Han Chul Woo and for the Gwangju team Seo San Won.
