Han group at 200k |
Twenty Randonneurs from 6 countries (Korea, New Zeeland, USA, The Netherlands, Canada and Germany) congregated at the FamilyMart in Gwangju, ready for the 400K. With 4,250 meters (elevation profile) of climbing and night temperatures just above the freezing point the course was challenging and at the end 12 riders finished within the time limit of 27 hours (FINISHERS). After leaving Gwangju at 06:00 riders headed south to the first control in Haenam on quiet country roads lined by cherry trees in full bloom. From Haenam riders continued south and crossed over to the island of Wan (Wan-do) on a quest to cover four islands in a couple of hours. On Wan-do they followed the coastal line admiring the local economy built on the fishing and checking an “Info Control”. From there riders crossed to Sinji-do where they took a ferry to the island of Gogeum (Geogum-do). After one more bridge and riders arrived on Joyak island (Joyak-do), with the tiny fishing village of Eodu (Population 75) located at its very end. Lunch with octopus, seaweed and other delicacies from the ocean was served in the Kwon residence and was the highlight of the day, especially in light that the majority of the climbing was still to come. After lunch riders reversed the route and headed to Maryang on the mainland. By the time Yulpo (a seaside resort) at km 260 was in sight night had swallowed the riders. After fueling up at the Family Mart a “night of pain” was approaching. Much of the climbing took place on a 100km stretch leaving Yulpo. As an “insult to injury” there was no opportunity to refuel on a 100km stretch between Boseong and Damyang and riders had to carry supplies. By now only four groups of riders had survived. Somewhere after Boseong the Canadians got off course and, according to a text message they left, “they had missed a turn and were developing their own 400K”. Three groups made it through the mountains and after the last control in Damyang it was smooth sailing on Rt. 29 into Gwangju. The group of Han Chul Woo, Kim Young Han and Park In Soo was the first to arrive followed by the group of Boonstra, Schoenemann, Morris, Hennighausen and Choi Wondu and the group around Han Soon Kwon, Han Hee Suk, Kang Dong Kyun and Lee Dong Ho. Han Chul Woo had the following to say: The "ever-untiring" ironman Park In Soo from Daegu made a group with Han Chulwoo and Kim Young Han and mercilessly led the group to the end. Chulwoo having a sore knee from the start kept lagging behind and Young Han, exhausted from cat 3 climb after Yulpo asked In Soo many times to have a break but In Soo quietly kept pedaling as if nothing were heard. In the end, this was the source of power that brought everyone to the last control.”
- The 400K is easier than the 200K (헤닉하우즌 로타)
- The shifter cable was only 10 years old (after Schoenemann's cable broke)
- Where is my car? (Morris's car was towed in Gwangju)
- Ignore the pain. (Hennighausen to Chulwoo who had a sore knee)
- ak! ak! (Kim Young Han trying to stay awake on the way to Damyang)
- Did you know you can fall a sleep while riding? (Kim Young Han)
- No, I have to run Marathon this Morning (Park In Soo when asked if he would stay in Gwangju on Sunday)
- It was spray muscle relief, pressure band, pain killer and the quote "ignore the pain" that kept me pedaling. (Chulwoo at the finish)
